What is changing

Companies House is moving to a system where certain people connected to companies must verify their identity. This includes directors, people with significant control, and some people who file information.

The exact implementation is phased, so it is important to use the latest Companies House guidance before acting.

The rollout dates that matter

GOV.UK says voluntary identity verification became available from 8 April 2025. The same guidance says identity verification will become a legal requirement from autumn 2025.

Companies House also says that from 18 November 2025, directors and people with significant control can use a personal code instead of providing full personal details on certain filings, including confirmation statements.

What directors should do now

Check who in the company will need to verify identity and whether you use an authorised agent. Then review when your next confirmation statement or officer appointment filing is due.

Handling the verification step early reduces the chance of a filing problem close to a legal deadline.

FAQ

Is identity verification already mandatory for every existing director today?

The rollout is phased. Use the latest Companies House guidance for the exact current requirement because the timing depends on the stage of implementation.

Does this replace confirmation statements?

No. Identity verification is a separate requirement. Companies still need to meet their existing filing deadlines.
