Penalties for Missing Self Assessment Deadline

Missing the Self Assessment deadline can trigger more than one type of cost. HMRC can charge a late filing penalty, charge further penalties if the return stays outstanding, and charge interest and late payment penalties if tax is paid late.

Late filing penalties start quickly

HMRC says an initial penalty applies if your tax return is up to 3 months late. Additional daily penalties can then apply if the return remains outstanding for longer.

Further penalties can also arise at 6 months and 12 months late, so delay gets more expensive over time.

Late payment is a separate issue

Late payment does not just mean one fixed extra charge. HMRC can charge interest on late tax and separate late payment penalties depending on how long the tax remains unpaid.

That means filing the return but leaving the tax unpaid can still create a growing problem.

The best response if you are already late

The fastest way to reduce the damage is usually to act immediately rather than waiting for a better moment. File as soon as you can, check the HMRC penalty guidance, and look at HMRC payment support options if paying in full is the problem.

If you believe you had a reasonable excuse, use HMRC's official route for appeals rather than relying on informal advice.

FAQ

Is filing late the same as paying late?

No. HMRC treats late filing penalties and late payment charges separately, so you can face both if you file and pay late.

Should I wait until I can pay before I file?

Usually no. Filing late can trigger its own penalties, so it is often better to file as soon as you can and then deal with the payment issue through HMRC's official options.
